I will be giving examples of music videos that cover these types:
Abstract/concept - Ed Sheeran - Don't
The video is centred around a dancer, there are some narrative elements as the dancer grows from living in a run down house to living in a mansion, however as the video is mostly focused on the dancing it is a concept video.
Performance based - Eminem - Lose Yourself
This video is mostly performance based as you can see Eminem rapping on the stage and to the viewers. However it may also be seen as narrative based, as it uses extracts from the film '8 mile'.
Animation (digital) - Gorillaz - Feel Good Inc
This music video is fully animated, The artist themselves have been turned into cartoon representations of themselves.
Pastiche - Cee Lo Green - Forget You
The music video of 'forget you' is pastiche because it is set in different periods of time. It begins when the singer is a child and progresses in the years to when he is an adult. It also has some narrative elements as we see the actor try to get the attention of the women in the diner, and eventually moving on from her.
As live/in concert - Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit
This music video is presented as being live/in concert. However in videos like these the artist is usually lip syncing, or the music is synced up to the live performance.
Narrative Based - Daniel Powter - Bad Day
This music video is narrative based as it is the story of two similar people who seem to be looking for love. The musician is also seen throughout the music video so it also has elements of a performance based video.
Parody - The Wanted - Walks Like Rihanna
This music video parodies many other music groups including n sync and classic black and white music videos.
Cinematic - Imagine Dragons - I Bet My Life
This music may be seen as cinematic as has a cinematic storyline and uses a well known actor. It may also be seen as narrative, as it is the story of a man who is trying to return home.
Intertextual - Katy Perry - Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)
This is an example of an intertextual music video as there are credits at the beginning and end of the video, which gives it the appearance of a film. There are also references to social media websites, for example at the start the character can be seen looking at a facebook like website, which might suggest that this video also has some parody elements.
